Limitations of small-scale yielding for fatigue crack growth

The work described here has led to a simple criterion that defines the boundary of small-scale yielding, SSY, regime avoid invalid use LEFM parameter, ?K, as characterising parameter for fatigue crack growth rate. approach proposed is based on analysis tip opening displacement, CTOD, and its separation into elastic plastic components. SSY conditions are shown dominate when component CTOD >75% total measured at distance 8 ?m (the finite element mesh size) behind tip, i.e., ??e/??t > 75%. Large-scale LSY, become dominant relatively large values < 60%. An increase in length (and therefore ?K), decrease yield stress material existence plane all promote LSY. results obtained from various loading geometric simulated this demonstrate caution should be used assuming ?K valid even high strength alloys like Ti6Al4V. In material, was crossed lost, longest lengths studied case overloads.
